In a negotiated procedure, the Baumschlager Eberle Architekten design won the “Digital Media Centre and Campus Development” project of the Rundfunk Berlin-Brandenburg (rbb).
The aim is to make the rbb area and the buildings as they are used today fit for the future: with regard to the outdoor area, the design sets out to link the campus to the urban setting. In future, a media centre with a newsroom will serve as the core for organising new worlds of work based on the “crossmedia” principle. The idea is to boost the attractiveness and efficiency of the rbb site with pioneering effect.
The Baumschlager Eberle Architekten design brings a new piece of city to Berlin, obtained through a careful handling of existing buildings, a coherent network of paths and an architecture which acts as a focal point of the future campus. The historical buildings were preserved to the greatest possible extent and partially transformed.
The newsroom with its wooden structure and glass dome places an innovative accent that puts the visibility of the material and the special geometry of the building at centre stage. The implementation of sustainability in architecture continues at different levels. On the one hand, by updating the existing structures. On the other, by creating an architectural aesthetic whose acceptance leads to particularly longevity.
