"Nowhere do everyday life and architecture meet as directly as in housing. The home is the human's oldest and most intimate shelter, and its relevance and social significance are enormous."

A book in the image of our buildings
“Baumschlager Eberle Architekten 2010 – 2020” presents a body of work characterised by a self-assured sustainability that is strikingly topical.
“Baumschlager Eberle Architekten 2010 – 2020” chronicles the recent work of a global architecture practice with its roots in Austria’s Vorarlberg. Its 600 pages provide detailed descriptions of over 50 buildings completed in the last decade alongside in-depth studies of more than a dozen major projects illustrated with images, drawings and texts. Its key message is that every project – irrespective of size or typology, whether in Europe or in Asia – is an expression of the firm’s clearly defined values, proof that its commitment to quality and methodology can work around the world. And, of course, that sustainability is much more than an energy certificate. The environmental and societal significance of their architecture – and so its enduring viability – are strikingly topical.

Rethinking traditional building projects is one of Baumschlager Eberle Architekten’s particular strengths. Our Paris office found the right partner for developing an innovative solution in clients Nexity Immoblier and Crédit Agricole. The result is the VIEW office block on the French capital’s boulevard péripherique ring road and, more recently, a 90-page book about the building published by archibooks in which interviews with managing director Anne Speicher and client representatives together with a wealth of illustrations document both the design process and the completed building.
Author Karine Dana underlines “the courageous decision” to build a structure that looks out onto what is really a motorway. In fact, the name – VIEW – says it all: a building that reinforces “the urban and visual intensity created by the city location”. Based on a dragonfly-shaped ground plan, the shimmering building is a closed form with perfectly designed corners that flow seamlessly from the ring road to the quiet of the rue Paul Meurice.
A number of different photographers offers their personal takes on VIEW in a range of styles from emblematic documentary to artistic interpretation of the dialogue between a building and its surroundings.
